In this film, dumping into the Chesapeake Bay has caused a harmless fish parasite to evolve into a human killer.
the organization is spouting, but will defend it anyway due to being followers without any free will of their own.The Bay is a message hidden within a film, similar to 2008's the Happening, The Bay tells of the consequences of destroying our environment. I saw Freddy's behavior here as a commentary on how a lot of the "followers" of these organizations act - i.e., they may not even understand what the organization stands for & may not even really believe the B.S. It was obvious he was defending Dodd due to being taken in by "The Cause" when he had nowhere else to go - despite the fact that most of them (other than Dodd himself) didn't like or trust him. This was also seen several other times throughout the film. However, at the same time he violently attacked anyone that questioned/criticized Dodd, even to his own detriment (notably when he was arrested & put in jail after the authorities arrested Dodd at the house in Ohio). What's especially ironic here is that throughout the film, it's clearly evident that Freddy never seemed to believe/understand the B.S.
I.e., it was interesting to see how these cults draw people in & when questioned by skeptics, react with hostility & defensiveness - this was seen in the film, and is also very true to life.
However, while that element of the movie was disturbing to me - it was also fascinating. I find cults & the leaders of said cults to be reprehensible & sickening - due to the power they exert over their sheep-like followers they have also been known to scam money out of their followers. So, he finds a "pseudo-family" with Lancaster Dodds & his followers - completely by accident i.e., he was a stow-away on the ship they were on. He also doesn't appear to have any family that's still alive (or at least no one he's in contact with). It's definitely one of PTA's best films, and at this point is my #2nd favorite film of his (my first being Hard Eight).Įssentially, I find that the film is about a loner/drifter with PTSD & anger issues - who hasn't been able to form any kind of permanent connection with anyone. Though I moderately liked the film on my first watch back in 2013, I really appreciated it much more this time around. I just re-watched The Master (for only the second time) on the Blu-ray recently. If it’s an isolated issue, I suppose I could chalk it up to that, but the disc looks virtually flawless and only experienced the skip during that scene. I did lend the disc once to a friend, a long time ago, but I haven’t had any problems like these with other movies. I originally commented to check if anyone had similar experiences. I was not aware of the Lionsgate issue it’s good to be know in case anything comes up with some of my other titles (fingers crossed it doesn’t). There’s no discolouring that I can see (I had some early Criterion Blu-Rays that experienced the ‘bronzing’ I think you’re referring to). You're the very first to report problems with this disc that I've ever seen, and this is a film from an important director with lots of fans, so hopefully your glitching disc is a rarity.
The percentage of bad discs is probably still incredibly low given just how many millions of discs are made and sold, but that particular replicator does seem to be worse compared to others. Has anyone encountered a similar problem?Īny discoloring of the disc? Does it look more yellow/golden in color than other Blu-rays? Anything look weird around the outer edge of the disc (air bubble perhaps)?Īnchor Bay used the same replicator as Lionsgate, and I imagine you've seen people complaining about bad Lionsgate discs here and there. My disc shows no visible scratches and it’s been kept safely stored in its case. My disc is skipping during the “From the Window to the Wall” scene, specifically the part in which Joaquin and Malek are taking part in a test, just after the latter mentions Dodd’s daughter, from around 1:26:40 to 1:28:43. It’s been a few years since I’ve watched my Blu-Ray and I’ve been encountering a serious issue.
